Welcome to our Bed and Breakfast

Otterburn Sporting Clays was set up to promote safe clay pigeon shooting in Northumberland, in particular around the Redesdale area. We cater mainly for individuals and small groups of most ages. Shooting is by appointment only and carefully arranged so that you have an enjoyable time during your stay or visit to Redesdale. Safety is naturally of the utmost importance and care is taken by our shoot manager to progress at your pace, so that the novice clay shooter does not feel under pressure, or uncomfortable in any way and is more relaxed, thereby enhancing safe use of the gun.

In 1821 Otterburn mill was acquired by one William Waddell. It was in this year that he as a younger member of a respectable family of woollen manufacturers, brought his young bride, 17 year old Charlotte Ferrier, with whom he had eloped, to the remote Otterburn village - Charlotte having absconded from the fashionable 'School for Young Ladies' in George Square, Edinburgh.

A famous Otterburn battle took place according to Scottish sources on 5 August 1388, or 19 August according to English sources, as part of the continuing border war between England and Scotland. Partly fought in moonlight, it was a victory for the Scots, led by James Douglas, 2nd Earl of Douglas, over Harry Hotspur, son of the Earl of Northumberland. Douglas was killed in the battle, though his victory added to the prestige of his house, foremost among the border fighters of Scotland.

The Otterburn ranges are the second largest live firing range in the country and has been used for military training since 1911. It covers over 90 square miles. With a wide variety of terrain and farms with their buildings, fields and livestock it provides a realistic environment for British and NATO soldiers to train here each year with the latest infantry weapons, artillery and helicopters.
